Couples therapy

Therapy for couples

For partners who have stopped reaching each other — and for those deciding what comes next.

Who this is for

Most couples arrive later than they meant to

By the time partners come to therapy, the argument is rarely about the dishes. Underneath the surface conflict there is usually a much older question: do I matter to you, can I reach you, am I safe here.

I work with couples at every stage — dating, engaged, long-married, separating, and everything in between. You do not have to be in crisis to benefit, and you do not have to agree about whether to stay together in order to begin.

What couples bring

  • Recurring conflict and arguments that never resolve
  • Emotional distance, loneliness within the relationship
  • Communication that has broken down into criticism or silence
  • Intimacy and sexual difficulties
  • Infidelity — the discovery, the aftermath, and the question of repair
  • Trust rebuilt after secrecy, addiction or dishonesty
  • Parenting and in-law conflict; families of different cultures
  • Life transitions — a new baby, relocation, illness, retirement
  • Deciding whether to stay together

Specialist areas

Particular work I am often asked for

Pre-marital counselling

Structured conversations before marriage — expectations, money, family, intimacy, culture and the assumptions each of you has never had to say out loud. I also work with couples entering arranged or family-introduced marriages.

After infidelity

An affair does not have to end a relationship, and staying together is not the only good outcome. I have spent years on this work: stabilising the immediate crisis, understanding what happened and why, and rebuilding trust honestly — or parting with less damage.

Separation & divorce counselling

For couples who are deciding, and for those who have decided. Support to separate with clarity and dignity, to co-parent well, and to grieve a relationship properly rather than carrying it into the next one.

How the work goes

Both of you, and the thing between you

We usually begin with a session together, and often an individual session with each partner, so I understand how each of you experiences the relationship. From there we meet as a couple.

My approach draws on emotionally focused and attachment-based couples work, the Gottman Method, and psychodynamic couple therapy — which means we work with the emotion underneath the argument, not only the argument itself. I am not there to referee or to decide who is right. I am there to help you both be heard, and to interrupt the cycle you keep falling into.

Sessions are held by secure video anywhere in California, in English or Farsi.
